It's ok to change: My style evolution

Before the Big 5-0: An Explosion of Colour

As my 50th birthday has just been and gone (ok it was January, I’m still coming to terms with it), I’ve been reflecting on my style journey over the past 8 years (two years before I started styling, and when I started to delve deeper into my style). Back in the day, with a toddler in tow, my wardrobe was a veritable explosion of colours… and a lot of confusion. I loved bold patterns, statement accessories, and vibrant hues - and shopping, I loved that a lot (and I still do)! My style improved, but it was more colourful than ever! Life has a way of nudging us toward change though.

The Shift Toward Minimal

Enter lockdown—a period of introspection… and anxiety… and no shops! Suddenly, comfort and practicality took precedence and neutrals calmed me. Amid this shift, I really discovered the beauty of a more minimal approach.

It’s ok to move on!

Here’s how my style has evolved:

  1. Neutral Tones: My once-colourful wardrobe has transformed into a calming palette of neutrals—whites, creams, earth tones and even a bit of black. These colours feel sophisticated and timeless.

  2. Capsule Wardrobe: My wardrobe is pretty much a (large) capsule wardrobe now—a collection of versatile pieces in colours that work together. I can’t say I’m there yet, but quality over quantity and a focus on pieces I not only love but that work together is key.

  3. Interesting Details: Bold patterns and bright colours have given way to interesting details - I love adding interest in a raw hem, a big sleeve, as long as it’s in a neutral. Interesting silhouettes and well-tailored basics is my goal.

  4. Metallic Magic: I really enjoy adding metallics to my outfits in clothing and accessories. They work to elevate and add a touch of glam and are surprisingly versatile. They add a bit of confidence and boldness to simple outfits.

  5. Investing in the Right Pieces: I’m trying not to chase trends and be influenced, although incorporating some trends is still important to me, to remain current. I’m working towards investment pieces, buying (and selling) on Vinted and trying to eschew fast fashion.

The Joy of Less

Surprisingly, I am finding a lot of joy in simplicity. Tonal and monochromatic ensembles—a white top with jeans, simple neutral dresses, gold shoes! The absence of bright colours doesn’t feel like a loss; it feels like liberation. I has encouraged me to focus even more on self-expression. More of that next time!

Looking Ahead

Who knows what lies ahead? Currently I feel happy in neutrals and I will still add a pop of colour here and there and continue to wear what I own, but I doubt there will be much pattern incoming. Stripes don’t count, but I can’t even see any more leopard print coming back in any time soon. Although in my dotage, I plan to go full Dorian Gray and embrace another style evolution.

Style isn’t about conforming to societal pressures of what to wear as a Mum, what you shouldn’t wear turning 40 or 50 or 60 or even what to wear as a stylist (should I be wearing colour?); it’s about authenticity and evolution. And allowing yourself to evolve without feeling like you’ve done something wrong! It’s good to evolve and to let go of what no longer works for you. Minimalism (well, it’s more minimal than it was!) has allowed me to rediscover myself—one intentional outfit at a time. So here’s to embracing the next chapter with style, confidence, and a well-edited wardrobe.
