How to dress for autumn - 7 easy layering tips
/It seems to me that every season, we forget how we dressed the year before and make a few mistakes before we remember! I usually get caught out in autumn being too cold in the mornings and too hot by the afternoon.
Layering is therefore the key to autumnal dressing and I know a lot of people struggle with how to layer. And in particular, how to do it successfully and without looking like Joey in that episode of Friends where he wears all of Chandler’s clothes? So here are my 7 easy layering tips:
Keep the layers thin - if Joey taught us anything, it’s that you need thin layers to make the look work. Thin layers that won’t add too much weight or bulk to the look.
Layer over - this sounds rather obvious, but adding layers over something. Think jumpers over dresses or cardigans and blazers over light knits. Think longer coat over leather jacket (maybe that’s more one for the winter - or the Scots).
Layer under - a less obvious one but a tight-fitting plain or patterned layer underneath a dress or jumper can add a great pop of interest. Also think about using shirts and blouses under jumpers - show the cuffs and collars intentionally.
Tonal dressing - if you find it all a bit tricky to contemplate, then think about wearing tones of the same colours. Think beiges and browns or denims and blues for a sophisticated look, or tones of pinks and reds for a bolder look.
Add a scarf - now is the time to wear those large cotton scarves to add pattern and interest.
Textures - think about wearing different textures together like leather, lace and a fluffy knit - especially when done with neutrals, this is a really sophisticated look.
Footwear update - if your boots are looking scruffy, then now is the time to look for a new pair so that you’ll get the most wear out of them into spring next year. An out-of-date shape or scruffy shoe can really ruin a great outfit, so update your ankle boots and remember to think about your lifestyle - I only buy boots I can walk 10,000 steps in! I have plenty that I can’t and, no surprise, they’re not well worn!
