BASIC “RULES”

  • Pieces that fall smoothly over your curves and have clean lines

  • Top that reveal skin at the shoulder, collarbone or cleavage

  • Monochromatic separates

  • Pieces that incorporate vertical detailing

X SHAPE TIPS

WHAT TO AVOID

  • Anything oversized, baggy or too tight

  • Stiff fabrics, textured fabrics or very thin fabrics

  • Clothes that are cut straight up and down or boxy

  • Tops and jackets that end at the fullest part of your hips 


THE DETAIL…

JACKETS

  • Fitted, belted, trench, single-breasted styles that hits at the point where the hip starts to curve out or that just covers the bottom

  • Narrow lapels tapered to the waist or contour seaming create a nice vertical

TROUSERS/JEANS

  • Flat-front straight leg or flared or even bootleg trousers that sit on your natural waist with a side or back zip

  • Jumpsuits

  • Straight cut, trouser leg or slight bootcut jeans that don’t nip in at the knee too much

  • AVOID flap pockets or patch pockets or extra embroidery on the rear

SKIRTS

  • Subtly tapered skirts with an off-centre slit, A-lines and easy wraps

  • AVOID boxy styles, stiff fabrics, full styles, patch pockets and horizontal detailing

DRESSES

  • Wraps, shirts, A-lines and belted, shawl collars, crossovers, off the shoulder or strapless

  • AVOID anything too loose or too fitted, high necklines, stiff fabrics and boxy shapes or horizontal details.

SHIRTS/TOPS

  • Wrap styles, off-the-shoulder necklings, deep V necks, small collars or narrow lapels

  • Diagonal hemlines are great at disguising hips if you wish to do so

  • AVOID boxy cuts, baggy or too tight, hems that end at the fullest part of your hips

COATS

  • Single-breasted belted coat (trench, or fitted style)
